Scheduling a pest control service is only half the equation. What happens before the technician arrives matters just as much as the treatment itself. Proper preparation is what allows our technicians to access the areas that need treating, apply product where it will actually make contact with the pest and deliver results that hold up under the warranty.
We send every customer a preparation sheet before their appointment because we take this seriously and we want every service to perform at its best. This article focuses on interior ant and roach treatment preparation since summer is peak ant season in the South Bay and interior treatment is where preparation makes the biggest difference. We covered flea prep in a past article and we will be covering preparation for a few other pest services in future articles as well.
Why Preparation Is Non-Negotiable
Here’s the honest truth about preparation: it directly determines how effective your treatment will be and whether your warranty applies. Any area that is not properly prepared when the technician arrives will be noted and will not be covered under the warranty. This is not a policy designed to make your life difficult. It exists because treatment applied to an area that hasn’t been cleared cannot make proper contact with the surfaces where ants and roaches are actually traveling and harboring.
Think about it from the technician’s perspective. If the cabinets are full of dishes and food, if the counter tops are covered with appliances and clutter and if the areas under the sink are packed with cleaning products, the technician cannot treat the cracks and crevices and surfaces where pest activity is concentrated. The treatment goes on top of whatever is in the way and the pests remain undisturbed in the spaces that actually matter.
Preparation is your contribution to the treatment. The technician brings the expertise and the product. You bring the access. Both are required for the service to work.
What to Do Before We Arrive: Room by Room
The kitchen
The kitchen requires the most thorough preparation and for good reason. It is almost always the primary area of ant and roach activity in a home and it is the space where proper treatment has the greatest impact.
Completely empty the entire kitchen. Every cabinet, every drawer and every counter top needs to be cleared as though the kitchen is vacant. Items can be placed on the kitchen table, coffee table, couches or anywhere outside the kitchen. Counter tops and floors should have nothing on them. This is the single most important preparation step and the one that makes the biggest difference in treatment effectiveness.
Once cabinets and drawers are empty they should be left open. The technician will inspect these areas before treating and open cabinets allow full access to the interior surfaces, hinge areas and back walls where pests concentrate.
Clean all cabinets, drawers and counter tops thoroughly before we arrive. Removing food debris and grease residue gives the treatment a clean surface to bond to and removes the food signals that have been attracting pest activity.
Bathrooms
In bathrooms remove all items from counter tops, cabinets and the area under sinks. Any clutter or cleaning materials around the toilet area should also be cleared so the technician can access the cracks and crevices around the base and behind the fixture. Bathrooms are a common secondary area for both ant and roach activity because of the consistent moisture and the harborage opportunities around pipes and fixtures.
Baseboards throughout the home
Along baseboards in all rooms move small items away from the wall by about five to six inches. This includes shoes, boxes, toys, laundry and anything else that tends to accumulate along walls. Heavy furniture does not need to be moved and our technicians can work around larger pieces. The focus is on clearing the small items that block access to the baseboard areas where product needs to be applied.
After the Treatment: What to Do and What Not to Do
How you care for your home in the days and weeks after treatment is just as important as the preparation before it. The product that has been applied needs time to work and certain activities can interfere with that process.
Do not clean treated areas with liquid products
This is one of the most important post-treatment instructions and one of the most commonly overlooked. After treatment do not wipe down cabinets, counter tops or baseboards with any liquid cleaning product. Wet cleaning removes the product from surfaces before it has finished working and significantly reduces the effectiveness of the treatment.
If you need to remove dead insects from treated surfaces you can use a dry paper towel, a dry cloth or a vacuum. That’s it. Liquid cleaning products on treated surfaces should be avoided for as long as possible after the service.
Vacate for three hours
All people and pets must leave the home before interior treatment begins and must not return for a minimum of three hours after the service is complete. This is California state law and ASPCW company policy. Persons with health conditions or who are pregnant must vacate for 24 hours and should follow their doctor’s advice.
Give the treatment time to work
Per California state law and product label requirements any re-treatment must take place no sooner than 21 days after the first service date. This is not an arbitrary rule. It exists because treatments need adequate time to work through the pest population and applying product again too soon can be counterproductive and potentially unsafe.
If you feel treatment is needed in an area before the 21 day mark it is worth knowing that exceptions to this rule are very rare. There are genuinely few situations where retreating before 21 days is appropriate or even beneficial given how treatments are designed to work over time. In those rare cases where it is warranted a service charge of $55 will apply. That charge is waived when you wait the full 21 days and the home is fully prepared according to the prep sheet for any follow-up service.
Why Summer Ant Prep Matters More Than Any Other Season
Summer in the South Bay is peak ant season. Argentine ant colonies are at their largest and most aggressive during hot dry months and the pressure on South Bay homes is at its highest from late spring through summer. This is the time of year when interior ant activity is most common and when preparation for interior treatment makes the biggest difference.
An interior treatment during peak ant season that is properly prepared for can deliver significant relief and maintain it through the warranty period. An interior treatment applied to a kitchen that wasn’t fully cleared gives the ants exactly the harborage and cover they need to avoid the product entirely. The effort you put into preparation is directly proportional to the results you’ll see.
If you are already on a recurring service plan with us your regular exterior treatments are working to keep ant pressure down year-round. When interior activity breaks through during summer an interior treatment with full preparation gives you the fastest and most complete path back to control.
A Note on Unprepared Areas
We want to be transparent about what happens when areas are not prepared at the time of service. Our technicians are trained to note any areas that were not accessible or properly prepared. Those areas will not be treated and will not be covered under the warranty.
This is not meant to penalize anyone. Life gets busy and sometimes preparation doesn’t go exactly as planned. If you realize before your appointment that you won’t be able to fully prepare please call us and we can reschedule. We would much rather reschedule than send a technician to a home that can’t be properly treated and leave you with less than the full benefit of the service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need to empty the entire kitchen?
Yes. We know it’s a significant ask and we don’t make it lightly. The kitchen is where ant and roach activity is most concentrated and where the treatment needs to make full contact with every surface to be effective. A kitchen that is partially cleared gives the technician partial access and produces partial results. The full preparation produces the full benefit and that’s what you’re paying for.
Can I stay home during the interior treatment?
No. All people and pets must vacate before treatment begins and must not return for a minimum of three hours after it is complete. This is state law and company policy. If you have birds, reptiles or other sensitive pets please let us know when you schedule as those animals may need to stay out longer.
What if I accidentally mop or wipe down a treated area?
If it happens contact us and let us know. Wet cleaning of treated surfaces reduces the effectiveness of the product and may affect your warranty coverage depending on how soon after treatment it occurred. We’ll assess the situation and advise on next steps. This is also a good reminder to hold off on any liquid cleaning in treated areas for as long as possible after service.
Why do I have to wait 21 days before a re-treatment?
The 21 day minimum between treatments is established by California state law and product label requirements. It exists to ensure the treatment has adequate time to work and to prevent overexposure from applying product again too soon. Most situations show continued improvement through that window as the product works through the pest population. If you still have activity after 21 days and your prep was complete contact us within the warranty period and we’ll come back at no additional charge.
